Fall 2006 Teaching and Research
Teaching
In the Fall 2006, I will be teaching LIT 499, Narrative and Identity, and a First Year Seminar, The Persistence of Memory, and one section of LNG 201: Introduction to the English Language. In the Summer 2006, I taught ENGL 510: The Structure of English in Mallorca, Spain. Follow the links if you'd like to look at my syllabus or class resources. You may also look at archived websites for previous classes. For syllabi and descriptions of courses I'm developing, see my curriculum page. If you need to reach me, check my schedule. Also be sure to take a look at other faculty offerings in TCNJ's English Department.MLA 2006 Lexicography Discussion Group Session Abstracts

The interactive map of Anglo-Saxon Dialects and Textual Practices is now available. It uses Javascript, so make sure that you have installed a plug-in before you access the site. You can also take a look at the list of resources for studying "lesser known varieties of the English language" as well. Check back frequently to see how the list has grown (and feel free to contact me if you have any suggestions). Keep in mind that you can capture and edit streaming audio using TotalRecorder. The tutorials (available by October 4, 2005) were all created using Camtasia.
Education
In 1993, I finished my BA at the University of New Mexico. In 2001, I completed graduate study in English Language and Linguistics in the English Department of The University of Texas at Austin.Research and Publications
My research focuses primarily on Old English Language and Literature, but I'm also beginning to pursue research interests in lexicography, American dialectology, and contemporary English grammar. My essay, "Grendel: Another Dip into the Etymological Mere," appeared in English Language Notes in the March 2003 issue. My essay, "Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130" appeared in the Spring 2004 issue of Explicator. Currently, I'm processing data from a study of TCNJ students and the metaphors they use to describe themselves and investigating whether "y'all" is becoming a prestige form in New Jersey. I've also presented two papers at this past Modern Language Association Conference in Philadelphia: "Encoding Colonial Discourse in a Swahili-English Dictionary" and "Traversing Corpora: Tracking Auxiliary Change from Old to Middle English." My next conference paper investigates the phonological underpinnings of weak verb (walk-walked, as opposed to run-ran, which is a strong verb) structures in Old English.Service
Michele Lise Tarter, Diane Vanner Steinberg, and I are the co-sponsors of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society. If you're interested in pursuing graduate study, take a look at this presentation I prepared on graduate study for Sigma Tau Delta or this handout and brainstorming tool for Framing Your Future 2003. For more advice on Careers and Graduate Study, see Career Services many resources.
For some helpful hints on English Studies research, see my February 20, 2003, presentation or the short list of research links.
I've also prepared tips on technical communications for NJ IEEE.
For a synthesis of some ideas about writing curricula, please see the Academic Writing Web and my own summary. Academic Writing and First Year Seminar Faculty can also read about some strategies for using library full-text resources as part of their course design. I've put all these resources together into a Faculty Handbook for WRI102 instructors.
For a summary of activities I've been involved in regarding course development, see my curriculum page.
